Canada has proven reserves of lignite and sub-bituminous coal, with conservative estimates of 3.5 billion tons and 30 billion tons respectively. Most of the sub-bituminous coal is stored in the plains near Alberta, with a current cost of about $ 8.00 / tonne. In 1980, the country produced about 16 million tons of low-quality coal. By 2000, it was estimated that it could be raised to over 80 million tons. About 95% of the demand is now being used to generate electricity, but this percentage will decline in the next 20 years as the industrial heat transfer and utilization process matures. Two large pithead power plants are being designed actively: one at HatCreek in British Columbia and the other south at Jame Bay in Ontario. In Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario provinces, new power plants using low-quality coal will increase their generating capacity from 3.95 million kilowatts in 1980 to 5.5 million kilowatts in 1982.
