Rape requires S more than cereal crops because not only is its protein synthesis inseparable from S, but it is also required for the synthesis of oil, a major product of rape. Therefore, the production of rapeseed is very sensitive to lack of S. In the soil lacking N and lacking S, applying N-N alone would result in a decrease of rapeseed yield, while S alone could not achieve a yield increase. Although the close relationship between N and S nutrients in rapeseed has been well established, there is little known about the relative requirements of rape to N, S and the agronomic effect of applying S fertilizers during rapeseed growth.
