In the history of Chinese Bible translation of the last hundred years before the introduction of the Bilingual Mandarin Bible in 1919, the Western missionaries played a leading and dominant role while the Chinese scholars acted as “helpers”. Until the independent translation of the New Testament by Wang Xuanchen, who had assisted in the translation of “He Heben” in 1933, it set a precedent for Chinese independent translation, and Wang Xuanchen’s translation and translation had their own uniqueness. This article examines the multiple roles played by Wang Xuanchen and the socio-cultural contexts arising from his translation of the New Testament from the perspective of translator’s behavior criticism, especially the translator’s role-based theory, and then analyzes his translation features to reveal his translator’s will, identity and role The restriction of its translational behavior indicates that while Wang Xuanchen pursues the “truthfulness” of the biblical meaning, he presents the “pragmatic” nature of the religious expression and belief system.
