【Abstract】Nowadays,English learning has become more and more important for Chinese student.English is primarily used to communicate with others.From this point,students’ speaking ability should be paid more attention to.This thesis focuses on the effective and specific ways,such as free talk or discussion,duty report and so on,to create a good language surrounding to improve their speaking ability.

I Creating a Real and Interesting Language Surrounding
1.1 The function of the relax and real environment of speaking
The traditional grammar-translation teaching method played a definite role in English teaching over the past decades,but this method of learning English has not entirely catered for the new situation of learning a foreign language.Because teacher is always the important role in English class.But in fact,only the students act themselves as the hero,can the learn English effectively.From the view of Maslow’s hierarchy theory (Cheng Zhengfang,Gao Yuxiang,Zhen Richang,2009),motivation and need and the character of English learning,a relaxed and real learning climate should be providing for students.The English in class should be on the basis of the students’ understanding easily.The teachers should encourage their students to answer the questions in English as possible as they can.To the beginners,they often don’t dare to answer questions in English.So the teachers should encourage them with patience and help them to give up the shy minds.And the teachers should use English to teach English as much as possible,so that the students will gradually get used to listening,speaking and thinking in English.As time passes,students will get use to speak English and they’ll make a big progress.
1.2 The necessity of students’ high interest for speaking
The aims for English teaching is to train the students how to use the language.Yet this kind of ability will be developed more quickly on condition that the students are greatly engaged in the English language and immersed in an atmosphere of using the language (Li Tingxiang,1983).Climate is important because it creates an environment that encourages both achievement and motivation (Byrne,1991).In accordance with these theories,an English teacher is required to try to make the whole class full of communication.To some extent,the students’ attention and interests are aroused and in the meantime,the students’ speaking is effectively practised.As a learner,if he shows great interest in English learning,he will follow his teacher,pay all his attention on what the teacher is saying and spare no effort to catch up with the teacher.Then he will be willing to take part in class activities and communicate with others.Gradually,his oral English will be improved.Therefore,teachers should stimulate students’ interests for speaking out as much as possible. 1.3 Various activities to motivate students’ speaking interest
It is effective and functional to apply various and interesting activities with moderate challenge to attract students to arouse their curiosity in English learning in view of intrinsic motivation,arousal and the characteristic of language learning (Davies,Pearse,2002).Language learning need students to develop roundly in four skills of listening,speaking,reading and writing.Students are willing to participate in English learning by Combining English with recreation and to realize that English learning can be interesting with their involvement in which is the key to maintaining motivation.Games are welcomed in English teaching.As Hedge (2002) explains:Well-chosen games are invaluable as they give students a break and at the same time allow students to practice language skill.Games are highly motivating since they are amusing.Furthermore,they employ meaningful and useful language in real contexts.In-role play,songs and summer English camping trips are also effective.Various and interesting activities encourage students involve as much of the time and effort as possible and as well as enhance learning motivation.
2 More Chances for Students to Develop Their Speaking Ability
2.1 Free talk or discussion
This is a meaning-focused speaking activity because both the speaker’s and the learners’ attentions on the being communicated.Free talk can be effectively done in groups,encouraging students to express their opinions.The teacher can give students some open-ended questions and ask them to discuss these questions in pairs.The topics may include family,coming to school,future goals,work,and so forth.These topics are so closed to students’ life that every student can have something to say.The form is not formal and the climate is extremely easy,so that the students can express themselves freely and bravely.Maybe there are some mistakes during their talking.But it is much better than their keeping silent.Discussion in groups is same to free talk.They have many similarities.When students are talking and during the discussion,the teacher can take part in to encourage the students talk and discuss with English,sometimes the teacher also can correct the students’ errors appropriately.
2.2 Duty report
This activity can improve students’ oral fluency and production skills.There are more than one way of doing this.First:prepared reports.The teacher asks the students to prepare a two-minute oral report which they give to different parters or in front of the class.Topics can be choose by themselves or given by the teacher.Students prepare at home,using dictionary,text,reading sources,etc.Some suggested topics are:My family; My childhood;The Spring Festival.Second:newspaper talks.Each learner has to choose a short and interesting article from the newspaper to present to the class.The learner must not read the article aloud to the class but must describe the main points of the article in English.The class should then ask the presenter questions.Duty report is an ease way to students to speak out. 2.3 Retelling story or text
Retelling the texts means students use their own understandings to refine or imitate an article which is similar to the text.By retelling the texts what they have learned,students can improve their ability to express in English.It is a good way to improve oral English.Doing like this leads students to abandon the former way of just dealing with test papers,or caring much for their scores only,and it can stimulate their interest to speak out in English.So long as the teachers pay much attention to their brave experience instead of the frequent grammatical mistakes,creating very pleasant atmosphere for them to talk freely.
In conclusion,these specific ways are very practical for the students to improve speaking ability.Above all are only parts of the ways.Students’ own hard work and studying ways also can’t be ignored.
