For many years drilling cuttings and other polluting wastes generated during offshore drilling operations have been treated on land due to the limitations of the maritime regulations and, on the other hand, environmental requirements. However, the transport of large quantities of oil and gas-contaminated cuttings from offshore installations to land-based handling equipment (“Crane and Shipping”) is for better environmental and safety reasons. Disposal of oil and gas-contaminated drill cuttings at sea and re-use of recovered oil water in drilling fluids may provide the only solution to the problems inherent in the Lifting and Shipping Act. The development of this technology has entered into the practical phase. Since 2001, field tests have been conducted and satisfactory results have been obtained. In late 2002, a series of sea trials were conducted in the UK Sea of the North Sea to tackle the complexities of drilling waste disposal at sea. Reviewed the work done so far, provided on-site information on all aspects of the operation and carried out environmental and safety benefits analysis on specific programs.
