A series of the title toughening modified polyethylene tereph- thalate engineering plastics (TMPET) were prepared by thermal mechanical blending of the polyethylene terephthalate resin with the multifunctional master batch (MFMIB) in different ratio. The MFMBs were synthesized in a low viscosity reaction system by grafting copolymerization and reactive blending technique starting from polypropylene, ethylene ?propylene (M) and butadiene ?sty- rene(N) elastomer as the toughening agent through chemical bond conjunction derived from a monomer containing an epoxy group in the presence of benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The chemical structure, crystalline morphology, thermal properties and crystalli- zation behavior of the MFMBs, and the chemical structure, mor- phology and crystalline morphology and crystallization behavior etc. of the TMPETs were characterized by fractional extraction, JR , PLM , DSC analytical techniques and instruments etc. From the experimental data, it was found that: 1) In the preparation of MFMBs, the grafting ratio of mono- mers was in the range of 1. 44 3.02% , the conversion of mono- mer was in the range of 39.4 ?58. 8 % , and through monomer .73. bridge conjunction with PP, the approximate content of the elas- tomer was in the range of 0.99 ?.31 % ,which indicated that good compatibility in the MFMBs existed between PP and the elas- tomers ,so did between MFMJ3 and PET , when they were blended, the viscosity of PET was increased, and that MFMIB was a com- pound multifunctional master batch having good compatibility and tougheness. 2) Crystallization of PP in the MFMBs was nucleated hetero- geneously; 3) The toughened PETs prepared by blending PET with the compound multifunctional master batch developed in our study showed higher toughness and higher rigidity. For 4G ?(I ?c ?) ?.8, Notched Izod impact strength at 18t is 7. 08kJ/m2 (which is 2.38 times of that of PET) ; flexural modulus is 2419. 4MPa and tensile strength at yield is 61.99 MPa (which are 99% and 83% of that of PET respectively). As a new engineering plastics with ex- cellent balanced properties, the TMPETs had good ratio of tech- nique and economy. 4) Crystallization of PET and PP in the TMPETs were nucle- ated heterogeneously.
