In this paper the impact of phase noise induced by amplified spontaneous emission and nonlinear Kerr effect was analyzed in investigating the performance of BPSK homodyne receivers based OPLL in long-haul optical fiber communications. The phase noise includes two parts. One is linear phase noise which is directly induced by the quadrature component of the amplified spontaneous emission noise.Another is nonlinear phase noise which is induced by the interaction between nonlinear Kerr effect and the in-phase component of the amplified spontaneous emission noise.Under the Gaussian probability density function assumption the power spectral density functions of linear and nonlinear phase noise were determined, respectively.Using the power spectral density function expressions about phase error variance taking into account linear phase noise, nonlinear phase noise and shot noise of corresponding photodiodes were derived to analyze the performance of OPLL.The impact of the number of amplifiers, bit rate and signal power on the phase error variance was analyzed. From the numerical simulation the number of amplifiers and bit rate impose important influences on the phase error standard deviation.
