铁保是清代中期的一位书法大家,书法史上将他与刘墉、翁方纲、成亲王永瑆并称为乾隆四大名家、又称与刘、翁鼎足而三。他曾在江苏地区较长时间居官任职,做过乡试主考官、漕运总督、两江总督等显赫职位,编辑过《八旗通志》、《熙朝雅颂集》等鸿篇巨著。作为书法大家,铁保没有留下什么专门的理论著作,他对于书法理论、书法美学的思想散见于一些书法作品和 Tie Bao was a calligrapher in the middle of the Qing Dynasty.
