宋代目录学有着突破性的发展，是建立在宋代印刷业发展、藏书量增加的基础上的，是宋代经济、文化繁荣发展的结果。晁公武所写的《郡斋读书志》正是建立在这个基础之上的。该书基本上包括了南宋初年以前的各种重要著述，其独特的编写方法，对于后世目录学影响深远，引起了人们对它的重视。
