棉铃虫属鳞翅目夜科,是新疆棉区的一种主要害虫。北疆棉区一年发生2—3代,以二代幼虫为害棉花最重。南疆棉区一年发生3—4代,以三代为害棉花。每头雌蛾产卵多达5000余粒,少的120多粒,一股为962—1826粒。一只雌蛾一生一般可产幼虫500条以上。初孵幼虫多取食未张开的小叶,二龄以后为害嫩蕾、花、幼铃,取食蕾、花的雄蕊和雌蕊的柱头,并钻入子 Helicoverpa armigera Lepidoptera noctiluca, is a major pest in Xinjiang cotton area.
