亨利·詹姆斯的小说虽然总体上延续了传统小说线性叙事的特点,但是也具有明显的空间叙事作品的形式特征,蕴藏着大量的空间隐喻。詹姆斯在《一位女士的画像》和《美国人》中借助时间的空间化、时间的凝滞、几何空间元素等方式创造了小说独特的空间形式,又通过物理层面对建筑景观的关注、心理层面对女性主体意识的建构以及社会层面对全球化趋势的再现,构建了由物理、心理和社会三维构成的小说空间隐喻。詹姆斯对空间维度的强烈关注,既拓展了小说的艺术形式,又丰富了作品的社会内涵。
Although the novels of Henry James continue the characteristics of the linear narrative of the traditional novels in general, they also have obvious formal features of the narrative works of space and contain a large number of spatial metaphors. James’s strong concern for the dimension of space not only expands the artistic form of the novel, but also enriches the social connotation of the work.
