“The Subject of Desire” is Judith Butler’s debut work and her first book devoted to the issue of “Subject”. In this book, Butler leverages the acceptance and development of Hegelianism by the French philosophy of the 20th century for us to outline the blooming and lost journey of the concept of Hegelian “subject”. In contrast, The Subject of Desire is one of the least sought after in all of Butler’s work, though (critique) Hegel’s philosophy is the starting point and cornerstone of all Butler’s theoretical discussions, which outline The dilemma of the subject (both masters and prisoners) is precisely the central theme of all the subsequent discussions by Butler.
