An analysis of the Australian National Railway’s fuel consumption and operating hours of the piggyback train between Adelaide, South Australia, and Port Augusta, using the Train Energy Model (TEM) simulation software package, The authors, in cooperation with the Australian National Railways, used the route since 1987 as a study sample to explore ways to improve train scheduling and an efficient “train speed” strategy. The relative performance of the existing modern DC drive diesel locomotives on the Australian National Railway compared with the hypothetical AC drive diesel locomotives with the same power is studied
