机体内各种屏障存在的意义,在于从血液或其他介质中保护功能组织。同时有选择性地透过有用物质,排除无用物质,从而维持最适宜的生物环境。做为眼内屏障(血-眼屏障):血-房水屏障,血-视网膜屏障以及血-视神经屏障等为人们所重视。这些多是以示踪物质做形态学研究为主而被证实的所谓“结构性屏障”(structural barrier)。另一方面电介质、激素、药物等在机体组织中移行时,则由各个屏障进行有选择性的透过,显示出屏障的功能性,此即所谓“生理性屏障”(physiological barrier)。对于这种屏障的全部过程虽然还不够清楚,但似可理解为不仅至少包括结构性屏障,而且也包括介于其间的细胞
