法国大革命是影响人类历史进程的重大事件,它摧毁了长期以来主导着欧洲的封建等级制度,代之以地位平等为基础的新型社会,也就是托克维尔所称的“民主社会”。但这场革命又与20世纪的革命不同,它不是发生在贫穷落后的国家,而是发生在当时最先进、最文明的国家。以至于革命到来之际,人们浑然无觉;发生之后,也常常不能确定它的性质。
The French Revolution was a major event affecting the course of human history. It destroyed the new feudal hierarchy that had long dominated Europe and replaced it with a new society based on equality of status, which Tocqueville called the “democratic society.” However, unlike the revolution of the 20th century, this revolution took place not in a poor and backward country but in the most advanced and civilized country at that time. Even when the revolution came, people were totally unaware. After that, people often could not determine their nature.
