As a pianist, I was invited to perform with cellist Eugene Friesen at the “International Cellist Festival” in Manchester, England. Every two years, the world’s greatest cellist and one dedicated to this humble instrument are bow makers, cello collectors and historians - get together for a week, visit the violin workshop, hold master lectures, Experts discuss the compromise, famous recital and social party. 600 or so attendees each night a concert. The opening night, Royal Northern Conservatory held an unaccompanied cello concert. There is no chair, no piano, no music stand and no band podium on the stage of the grand concert hall.
