在实验工作里,水银的用途很多。为某些特殊用途,需用非常純潔的水銀。在一系列的化学清潔处理之後,一般是將水銀放在真空里蒸餾幾次。一般蒸餾水銀的設备都需要隨時用手調節水銀面的高度。工作量虽少,但却要牵制住一个人。为多次蒸餾就要将一次蒸餾过的水銀注入第二套里去。若只有一套设备,則必須將一批水銀蒸餾一次以後,用已蒸餾过的水銀续入,代替未蒸餾过的水銀。最初的二次蒸餾出来的水銀,因为混有一次蒸餾的,必須再蒸餾一次。同样,二次蒸餾完备後,蒸餾第三次時,仍然要將最初的一部份重蒸。如此对時間和电的損失都很大。最嚴重的是:水銀可以使人慢性中毒。除了採取措施保障工作人員
