In 1991, the market value of the antibiotics in the United States increased from 4.8 billion U.S. dollars in 1990 to 5.3 billion U.S. dollars and is expected to reach 12.5 billion U.S. dollars in 1997. Cephalosporins are likely to maintain the largest market share, with estimated revenues of about $ 4.2 billion by 1997, followed by quinolones, with sales of more than $ 2.9 billion. Cephalosporins accounted for 44.8% of the market in 1991, and sales of antifungal drugs increased 50% following the launch of Pfizer’s Fluconazole (Diflucan). Quinolones appear most after Mile launched ciprofloxacin (trade name: Cipro) in 1987
