The article uses beat-bit series of synthetic speech stimuli to Chinese college students and native speakers of American English as subjects to compare and analyze their performance in / i / - / ι / perception. The results show that the American participants in the perception mainly rely on the spectral features to distinguish, less attention to the duration. In contrast, the undergraduates in China generally use the duration to distinguish, which is insensitive to the change of the characteristics of the spectrum. At the same time, the individual perception patterns of the Chinese college students are quite different and are at different stages of their cognitive development. In addition, the longer the Chinese college students’ experience in learning English is, the higher their cognitive development stage is located. This shows that the hypothesis of perceived development stage proposed by Escudero is reasonable in time dimension.
