说到B级片,影迷们都会有这么一个粗略的印象:投资小,制作周期短,粗制滥造,没什么大明星。有评论家曾经戏谑地用“3B”来形容这类低成本影片:血腥(blood)、胸部(breast)和飞车党(biker)。当然,血淋淋的脑浆内脏,纸糊的僵尸异形,火爆的汽车追逐,还有身材热辣、春光无限的性感女郎互相扭打……这些都是B级片的标志性特征。不过到了今日,B级片早已不是一个成本上的标准,而更多地代表了一种审美趣味。其实,很多大牌导演和演员也都是这种趣味的爱好者,例如彼得·杰克逊,刚刚还依靠血腥龌龊的《群尸玩过界》崭露头角,扭头就拍出了21世纪最伟大的史诗片《指环王》。而昆汀、罗德里格兹们更是在一部部投资不小的大制作中将B级片的黑色风格发扬光大。
