“倾盆大雨”在英语里是“It rains cats anddogs.”(天上落下猫和狗。)尽管人们决不会相信猫和狗真的会如雨点般从天而降,但从天空落下生物这种例子实际上并不少见。查尔斯·福特曾在他那本令人着迷的书里有不少这类奇异现象的描写。福特先生在他的一生中对于这种自然现象写下了近300个事例。例如1741年在英国的塞尔伯恩、阿尔雷斯福特、布雷德利三个城市的上空下了一场不可思议的阵雨,极为罕见的沉重片状物纷纷“以一定的速度”
