Ischemic postconditioning is a recently proposed new method with a wide range of clinical applications that can significantly reduce myocardial damage after ischemia-reperfusion. Ischemic postconditioning has been shown to play a role in cardioprotection through the early introduction of oxygen and the maintenance of acidosis in cardiac muscle tissue. Reactive oxygen species activate endogenous signal transduction pathways like ischemic preconditioning, whereas acidosis inhibits the opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Mitochondrial permeability transition pore plays a pivotal role in myocardial protection mechanisms.
