宁波市镇海口历来是兵家必争之地,素有“海天雄镇”“两浙咽喉”“浙东门户”之称。明中叶以来,镇海先后经历了抗倭、抗英、抗法、抗日等御侮战争,留下许多可歌可泣的英雄业绩和丰富而又珍贵的海防遗址,与其他地区的海防遗迹相比,具有范围大、遗迹多、类型广、保存好等明显特点,而且海防遗迹与众多较为著名的自然、人文景观浑然一体,相映成趣。这些遗留下来的文物古迹,也是国人不畏强暴、抗御外侮、自强不息的历史见证。
