Thomas Pynchon’s Mason and Dixon is a novel about the geo-spatial change of the American continent during the founding of the United States in the 18th century. The work reveals the geographical imagination and space politics of nation states by tracing the formation of the most important line of demarcation line “Mason-Dixon” on the map of the United States. As a carrier of spatial information in a particular historical period, the map drawn based on the “Mason-Dixon Line” reflects the process of the vicissitudes and development of the territories of the United States nation states. At the same time, it also implies colonial violence in the mapping process, regional disputes, Ethnic conflicts and cultural tensions. “Mason and Dixon” dramatically presents the intertwined themes of imperial discourse and national narrative by depicting the spatial map of American society before the American Revolution and the sense of territory.
