夜读煌煌八十万字的《柳如是别传》,一个问题始终萦绕脑际,挥之不去。那就是:贯穿这部堪称“典范”(库恩语)的史学巨著的治史旨趣到底何在?换言之,究竟是什么力量,促使本书作者在目盲足膑的风烛残年,耗尽十年心血,撰成此书?该书《缘起》不过数千字,但其要旨殊堪玩味。陈寅恪自述因二十年前得常熟白茆港钱氏故园中红豆一粒,而生笺释钱氏因缘诗之意;又说“世所传河东君(按即柳如是)之事实,多非真实,殊有待发之覆。
