The “Seminar on Heavy Metals of Exported Products of Traditional Chinese Medicines” jointly held by the Science and Technology Department of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Department of Quality, Foreign Affairs, the Department of Medical Affairs, and the Department of Economic Coordination was held in Tianjin from August 26 to 29, 1990. Sixty representatives from six provinces and municipalities including Tianjin, Shanghai, Shandong, Jiangsu and Jilin attended the meeting. According to statistics, in recent years, the export of Chinese medicine has grown rapidly. By 1989, it had reached more than 600 million yuan, of which 1/3 were proprietary Chinese medicines. There are 10 species that export more than US$1 million each year, and Pien Tze Huang ranks first. Since 1989, Canada, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong have successively suffered the destruction and ban on the sale of some Chinese proprietary Chinese medicines whose heavy metal content exceeds the standard. This has had a considerable impact.
