In the early 1990s, a new phenomenon emerged in the panorama of Italian literature: the emergence of fiction for national readers written and published by Italian non-European immigrant writers. The works of these writers aroused the first attention of critics and academics because of the realistic and novelty they displayed, and later aroused the interest of the publishing industry. Today, more than 20 years later, Italy has an increasingly strengthened awareness of the phenomenon of immigration and its multifaceted social and cultural impact. The author discusses the following questions: What is the contribution of this new immigrant literature to Italian literature? What kind of relationship does it maintain with the literary canon of Italian literature and the author’s motherland? What kind of “self” and “ The Imagism of ”The Other" nurtures the imagination and voice of immigrant writers. The author argues that Italian immigrant literature can not be considered a momentary fashion for all its genres, forms and themes. It can not even be included in the field of sub-literature, or is classified as an immature statement of Italian literature. The innovative tendency of Italian immigrant literature today reflects a cultural assimilation of the canon of Italian literature, including some distortion.
