The slowdown in the Chinese art market is an unavoidable fact. Last fall until the spring of this year, the market is a foregone conclusion. Compared with the spring of 2011, the profits of Poly Auction and Guardian, the leading auction houses in Mainland China, decreased by 50% and 60% respectively. Sothebys revenue in the spring auction in 2012 dropped 25% from the autumn auction in 2011, while the revenue from the 2012 autumn auction dropped only 19% from the spring auction of the same year. Among them, contemporary art in Asia, especially Chinese contemporary art, has been quite bleak. However, we can see that a large part of this result is due to the fact that auction houses are hard pressed to find the top spot in the declining market. Among the best shots, auctioneers are more demanding. When the boutique appeared, the buyers still did not hesitate. For example, Liu Wei 1992 “Revolutionary Family Series: Dinner” to HK $ 17.46 million deal, refreshing Liu Wei in Sotheby’s personal auction record.
