Sugar-free drinks or candy are generally thought to be less damaging to people’s teeth, but a recent study in Australia showed that there was no significant difference in the damage done to people’s teeth between sugar-sweetened and sugar-free drinks. According to the UNICEF report, sugar-free foods and beverages contain very high levels of acid and are therefore very similar to people’s teeth damage and sugary foods. Teeth damage is mainly due to the hard tissue where the acid dissolves the teeth, and the damage usually starts with the enamel layer of the teeth. When people drink sugary drinks, the bacteria in their mouth produce acid, so eating or drinking less sugary foods is usually thought to reduce acid production.
