Soil-free culture turf was made by using perlite, sawdust, coal cinder and sand as substrate instead of soil. The indexes of water retention, turf rolling time and turf weight of different substrates were measured and analyzed by variance analysis and gray system theory Synthetical evaluation of the method shows that perlite as the substrate in soilless culture turf best, followed by sawdust, cinder, the worst for the sand
