《古文百篇英译》(以下简称《英译》,100 Chinese Classical Prose Writ-ing in English,王恩保,王约西编注,北京语言学院出版社1990年出版)收编了起自春秋的孔子,迄于清代的沈复整整100篇优秀古典散文及其相应的英语译文。译文取自35部中外著名译家的汉英译著。名篇与佳译珠连璧合,相映成趣,堪称是一部向外国人和海外华人介绍中国优秀古典文学和中华民族传统文化的好读本。不过,本文之意不在佳译欣赏,而是拟将笔者在该书中所发现的一些尚未得到纠正的误译列举出来,与读者共同探讨。1.(原文)子曰:“默而识之,学而不厌,诲人不倦,何有于我哉?”(《论语·述而》) (译文)The Master said:“I have listened in silence and noted whatwas said;I have never grown tired of learning nor wearied of teachingothers what I have learnt.These at least are merits which I canconfidently claim.”(By Arthur Waley et al.《英译》第60页) 孔子这段话的意思是:“将学到的知识默默地记在心里,努力学习而不知满足,教诲他人而不觉疲倦,这些我做到了哪些呢?”孔子是中外教育史上名闻遐迩的卓有见地的教育理论家,也是一位有着丰富实践经验的老教师。他向来以好学著称,主张“敏而好学”,提倡“不耻
“Ancient Chinese a hundred English translation” (hereinafter referred to as the “English translation”, 100 Chinese Classical Prose Written in English, Wang Enbao, Wang Yuexiu annotation, Beijing Language and Culture Institute Press published in 1990) As of the Qing Dynasty Shen full 100 excellent classical prose and its corresponding English translation. The translation is taken from the translating of Chinese and English by 35 famous Chinese and foreign translators.
