魏长生进京,是秦腔史上的一大盛事,为人们所乐道。乾隆四十四年(一七七九),魏长生以高超的技艺,轰动京师。“自魏长生以秦腔首倡于京都,其继之者如云。”(昭连《啸亭杂录》卷八)魏长生在北京播下了秦腔的种子,他的追随者和合作者如陈银官、蒋四儿、戈蕙官、杨五儿等,都是有才华的艺人。一场“秦腔热”笼罩了北京剧坛。魏长生等人演出的剧目,“多扮男女私情”,与封建纲常名教大相抵触。封建统治者视之为洪水猛兽,大加挞伐,强迫秦腔艺人入昆弋班子。乾隆四十七年秋,
