本文是《新格罗夫音乐与音乐家词典》中由著名民族音乐学家内特尔所撰写的“音乐”条目的节译,其内容主要有二。其一,音乐在其语源学上的概念演化以及正式定义:内特尔从“音乐”的词源流交、各权威语言词典、百科全书、过去欧洲的音乐家言论、以及地方传统和习俗行为的考察出发,探讨了“音乐”概念背后的深广的文化内涵。其二,通过对六个文化样本:当代西方文化、东亚、伊朗和中东、印度、非洲文化、美国印第安和大洋洲文化中的音乐概念的描述,探讨了音乐在不同文化语境中的特征、范畴及相互关系的根本性理念。内特尔的论述完全立于一种多元的跨文化视角以及深邃的历史视域,从而摒除了以西方文化中的音乐概念为尊的一元观念。
This article is a translation of the section entitled “Music” written by Nettle, a famous national musicologist, in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and contains two main sections. First, the conceptual evolution and formal definition of music in its etymology: Nettle flows from the source of “music ”, various authoritative language dictionaries, encyclopedias, past European musician remarks, and local traditions and customs Based on the investigation of behavior, this paper explores the profound cultural connotation behind the concept of “music”. Second, through the description of music in six cultural samples: contemporary western culture, East Asia, Iran and Middle East, India, African culture, American Indian and Oceania culture, this paper discusses the characteristics and categories of music in different cultural contexts And the fundamental concept of mutual relations. Nettle’s essay is completely based on a multi-faceted cross-cultural perspective and deep historical perspective, thus excluding the concept of monopoly on the concept of music in Western culture.
