渝水区总面积1,776平方千米。现辖22个乡、镇(办事处),总人口72.4万,其中农业人口50万。全区有中学34所,完小237所,村小(教学点)57个,在校中小学学生107,157人。自1983年建区以来,该区在扫盲工作上取得了突出的成绩:1984年达到“基本扫除文盲单位”标准,12—40周岁的无盲率87.6%;1990、1991连续两年被评为全省“扫盲工作先进单位”;1993年经省里“两基”教育督导评估组验收,各项指标达到国颁和省颁标准;1994年被确认为全国首批实现“两基”的县(市、区)之一。日前,本刊记者瑛子就渝水区的扫盲工作采访了该区教育局局长、全国优秀教育工作者杨镇南同志。
