总结我国５０年社会主义建设的经验和教训，首要的或最根本的一条经验和教训就是，必须先搞清楚什么是社会主义、怎样建设社会主义。在这个问题上，邓小平同志做出了杰出贡献。邓小平同志对社会主义的认识有四大特点：其一，对什么是社会主义：只讲本质，不下定义；其二，对怎样建设社会主义：只定标准，不限方法；其三，在建设社会主义的系统工程中，强调：经济为主，百年不变；其四，在建设社会主义的对内对外关系上，应该：管好自己，不言他人。
