探讨一代先驱者文化人格的成因及其独特的魅力，不仅是进一步理解五四文学深层结构的需要，而且有助于考察中国文学从晚明到清末再到本世纪之初完成现代化飞跃的内在机制。五四一代文学先驱者在心态上迈出了由传统到现代人格转换的最具决定性的一步，体现出一种全新“超人”式人格价值取向。其特点首先表现在以个人参与历史的发展与创造，其次是对个人生命力量的高度推崇与刻意追求，第三是“重估一切价值”的决绝姿态，第四是超人式的自我牺牲精神。先驱者又不得不处于一种孤立无援的困境。究其根源，一是“别求新声于异邦”后的清醒，二是清醒后‘“上下求索”的艰难，三是启蒙者与启蒙对象之间所横亘的巨大历史鸿沟。但他们毕竟不是尼采理想中真正意义上的“超人”。其内省意识与其自觉的历史反省意识，现实反思意识与批判意识是分不开的，它尤其体现了对现代自我人格设计的主动追求。五四先驱者彻底冲破了传统理想人格模式，既体现了五四知识分子最根本的作为“人”的意识的觉醒，也表现出了异常的人格力量与人格魅力。

But they are not, after all, the real Superman in Nietzsche’s vision.
