通俗小说在民国时期有着为数众多的作者,其占有的市场份额甚至不输于新文学。通俗小说能够在中国现代文学期间保持经久不衰的生命力,既得益于广大市民读者所保持的传统的阅读趣味,也得益于现代文化市场重视大众文化消费的商业性取向。以张恨水为代表的报人作家秉持报人的职业敏感和求新自觉,主动适应报纸连载的要求,尊重普通民众的接受水平和阅读趣味,积极探寻、拓展现代通俗小说的生长空间,带来了现代通俗小说的商业性成功,造就了中国现代文学雅俗共存的文坛格局。
