1 Mass is over. The old-fashioned tube dress and open lace as the muster of the tide flock to the exit. As the last parishioners’ dresses disappeared, the arches began to desert beneath them, unbelievably hollow: a glass bell in a deserted church resembling a giant air pump. The bleak and lackluster midday sun shone through the narrow doors of the long windows to the back of the benches and the ornamental vortex; this light was sucked in by the void of great architecture. The strands of light, as if pushed by crooked cylinders, lean all the way against the lashes of spacious seats, lest they fall on the stone floor or fall over dusty music stands.
