The U.S. Department of Energy announced a few days ago that the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is accelerating the development of energy efficiency, renewable energy technologies and market-based solutions to strengthen US energy security, environmental quality and economic viability. To promote the production of cost-competitive renewable high performance carbon fiber materials from renewable, non-food based raw materials such as agricultural residues, woody biomass, USD 11.3 million will be funded for both projects. The two projects are studied separately by the Southern Institute of Birmingham, Alabama, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Gordon, Colorado. Of these, SRI will receive $ 5.9 million to innovate a multi-step catalytic process for the conversion of non-edible biomass sugars to acrylonitrile; NREL
