学衡派站在五四新文化运动的对立面上提出了他们“道德救国”的主张,这个主张一方面来自于他们对中国现实的思考,另一方面也与他们所受到的白璧德的新人文主义影响有关。他们所主张学习、保存的“中西文明”,大多是前现代思想,在实际的应用中就变成一种反现代性思想。这就与中国现实社会强烈要求发展现代性形成了一种历史的错位。这是包括学衡派在内的大多数文化保守主义长期被冷落的根本原因。
The standpoint of Xueheng station on the opposite of the May Fourth New Culture Movement put forward their claim of “moral salvation” on the one hand from their reflections on the reality of China and on the other hand, Humanistic impact. The “Sino-Western Civilizations” that they advocate studying and preserving are mostly pre-modern thoughts and have become anti-modern thoughts in practical applications. This created a historical dislocation with the strong demand of China’s real society for the development of modernity. This is the root cause of the long-term neglect of most cultural conservatism, including the Xueheng School.
