Objective: To observe the changes of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) in the distal part of the pituitary gland of rats at different altitudes and to explore the role of ACTH in the regulation of stress response in the plateau. Methods: The rats were randomly divided into 1700m, 3100m and 4050m3 groups. The rats were respectively transported to the corresponding altitudes of the plateau for 12 days. The levels of ACTH in pituitary tissue of rats at different altitudes were detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The content of ACTH decreased with the decrease of altitude. The content of ACTH in the 4050m group was higher than that in the control group (3100m), but there was no significant difference (P> 0.5). Because the immune system and the hypothalamus - pituitary cells produce hormones in the cells without storage, but in response to produce and play a role. CONCLUSION: Acute hypoxia can cause increased secretion of adrenocortical function, which may be mainly caused by stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors. The reflex causes the release of ACTH in the hypothalamus and increases the secretion of adrenocortical hormone. It is suggested that ACTH may be an important physiological and pathological humoral factor that responds to plateau hypoxia stress and plays an important role in short-term plateau hypoxia stress response.
