For most companies using IBM mainframes, the issue is no longer whether to allow system access over TCP / IP, but when and how to access it. But does the IP stack run directly on the IBM MVS operating system or use an external gateway to translate between established SNA and IP-based intranets? Only a few years ago, most companies would choose gateways. However, the situation has changed as IBM has greatly improved MVS IP services and bundled them freely in the operating system. Gateways still have a place, but most MVS hosts are now able to run native IP services without any performance impact and provide the latest in IP technology. According to IBM, at least 30% of host customers have IP loaded. As more and more customers upgrade to newer MVS releases, that number will grow to 90% over the next two years. The need to run IP does not mean that the SNA network on which the IBM host has been operating for many years has come to an end. In fact, due to the need to establish secure transactions and service quality assurance, SNA has become increasingly important for banking transactions and other services, and SNA has been growing.
