On February 8, Han Zheng, mayor of Shanghai, paid a special visit to China Telecom Shanghai for a survey. He also visited the Shanghai Telecom Museum. During his survey Han Zheng thought highly of the leading role of China Telecom Shanghai in the construction of “Smarter City” and encouraged China Telecom Shanghai to further develop the smart applications closely related with ordinary people like the “Smart Traffic”.
Meanwhile, Han Zheng said that standards should be formulated for the entry of Metro Optical Network (MONET) into the communities and buildings. Xiao Guiyu, deputy secretary-general of Shanghai government, and Wang Jian, head of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, also joined in the survey.
Han Zheng was accompanied by Zhang Weihua, general manager of China Telecom Shanghai. They first came to visit the Shanghai Telecom Museum near the Bund. The Shanghai Telecom Museum is located in the old building of the original Great Northern Telegraph. This modern construction with western features was built at the beginning of the 20th century and was the original place of China’s telecom industry. The first waterline chart of China is displayed in this museum and Han Zheng paid close attention to it. Zhang Weihua told Han Zheng that these precious exhibits were the important proofs for the origin of China’s telecom industry in Shanghai. The 100-year change of China’s telecom industry was condensed in the Shanghai Telecom Museum, which witnessed the urban construction and world-striking changes.
At the beginning of last year, Han Zheng also paid a visit to China Telecom Shanghai and directed the construction of MONET. At that time he hoped that China Telecom Shanghai could play an important role in the construction of“Smarter City”. In 2011, China Telecom Shanghai promoted the construction of this project, which included the broadband speed increase for “Smarter City”. The MONET covered 4 million people and recruited 1.3 million users. The average bandwidth increased to 8Mb. Shanghai became the No. 1 City of MONET in China. Han Zheng highly praised the great efforts China Telecom Shanghai made for the “Smarter City”.
Han Zheng also made a comment. Firstly, information technology should be promoted to change human beings’life. In the past 100 years, information applied great changes on people’s living style through technologies. These changes used to happen once in several generations but not they could happen several times in one generation. He said that Shanghai should take the lead in China and promote the construction of fiber-optical network by accelerating the improvement of information infrastructure. Secondly, the smart applications like “Smart Traffic”should be spread. China Telecom Shanghai helped Onstar provide network access services for over 400 thousand cars. The government vehicles and school buses should be able to connect to the Internet and equipped with smart applications like“Smart Traffic”. Thirdly, the MONET should be brought into the buildings and communities at a faster pace and the standards should come out as soon as possible.
