邮资机符志是一种复合戳记,由日戳和邮资戳两部分组成。邮资机符志附设日戳,使用时不需另用日戳盖销,操作简便省时。日戳内设有地名、局名和日期等要素,表明该符志仅在当日当地使用有效,可以避免隔日或异地被再次使用,造成邮资流失。故而日戳是邮资机符志的一个不可或缺的组成部分。这里需要指出的是,虽然我国邮资机符志的式样(包括日戳的格式)曾做过多次改变,但这种改变仅涉及新购置的邮资机,原已使用的邮资机,其符志仍可继续使用,不必改变。也就是说,我国邮资机符志实施“旧机旧式样,新机新式样”的办法。这就造成了现时新旧邮资机符志混用的现象,目前使用的邮资机符志,既有2000年以来启用的新式符志,也有20世纪八九十年代即已使用的旧式符志。邮资机符志式样的这种多样性和复杂性也反映在日戳方面。
