Iranian film director Abbas Kia Rostami did not need UNESCO’s Fellini medal to win the world’s attention. He has won a series of awards, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for the film “The Taste of Cherry.” However, the Iranian Ambassador attended the award ceremony for him at UNESCO Headquarters in November last year. This is a sign that his work has been officially confirmed by Iran. He waited for this for a long time. Although dissatisfied with his country’s censorship system, the 57-year-old film director decided to remain in his homeland and continue his filmmaking as many colleagues did. This positive sign is undoubtedly linked to the political changes in Iran. The election of Muhammad Khatami as Iranian President last May was a testimony of these changes. Abbas is deeply in favor of these changes.
