省水船闸顾名思义,是能节约通航用水的船闸。除闸室外还需建若干贮水池,使通航用水经过贮水池调蓄后能自流灌(泄)闸,反复使用以达到节水目的。多用于水源缺乏,通航用水须采取省水措施的地方。在这种特定条件下,省水船闸较之其它省水措施,如提水通航等较为经济合理。省水船闸在欧洲人工运河上用得较多。而我国在这方面的研究工作和工程实践都较少。
