Recently, a total investment of 350 million pounds of Vivergo ethanol plant in Hull put into operation. Vince Cable, minister for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), unveiled the plant. By using local feed-grade wheat, the plant has become Britain’s largest ethanol producer, creating more than 1,000 jobs. The Vivergo facility is a joint venture of AB Sugar, BP and DuPont. The plant produces 420 million liters of bioethanol per year, equivalent to one-third of Britain’s current total demand. Compared to regular gasoline, bioethanol will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50%, which is equivalent to the current emissions of more than 180,000 cars in the UK each year. The Vivergo plant will also produce 500,000 tons of protein-rich animal feed, which will provide about one-fifth of British dairy cattle feed.
