清康熙三十四年四月初六日(公元1695年5月18日),临汾发生强烈地震.康熙《平阳府志》记曰:戌时地震,有声如雷.城垣、衙署、庙宇、民居尽行倒塌,压死人民数万.近期在临汾及其邻近地区.多有记载此次大震的碑刻题记等史料发现.《重修平阳府城大云禅寺碑记》,见于临汾铁佛寺(即大云禅寺)塔内,这是一块镌刻因地震而重修大云禅寺的功德碑,记述了大云禅寺的历史沿革及遭康熙三十四年八级大震的灾害诸情.重修后的大云禅寺,至今仍矗立于平阳古城,颇为壮观,本期封面所刊照片,可见其雄姿,堪称临汾城内的名胜.《临汾县坡子里村地震碑记》,是1695年临汾大地震的专门记录.坡子里村,今属临汾县大阳公社,靠近当时的平阳府城(即今临汾市),地处震中区,死伤惨重.为昭后人,专门刻石以记之,因而成为名副其实的地震碑刻.这块碑刻,为确定此次大震的震中,划分其烈度,提供了第一手资料,笔墨虽然不多,实属难能可贵.这两通有关1695年临汾大地震的碑刻,为研究临汾盆地的历史地震,提供了极有价值的资料.
