BASF announced on November 28, 2013 that for the first time, bio-based 1,4-butanediol (BDO) was commercially produced from renewable raw materials and delivered to customers for testing and commercial use. The production process relies on the patented fermentation technology of Genomatica, USA. The fermentation process uses glucose as a renewable feedstock. The quality of BDO based on renewable raw materials is comparable to that of petroleum based BDO. BASF plans to expand its business with BDO derivatives based on renewable raw materials, including PolyTHF. BDO and its derivatives are used in the manufacture of plastics, solvents, electronic chemicals and elastic fibers. Elastic fibers are used in packaging, automotive, textile
