God in Eugene O’Neill’s play is no longer a Christian in the narrow sense of God. It refers to the ultimate mysterious power behind life. The concept of this “God” is vague and indefinable. In O’Neill’s different works, he has a different image due to the different circumstances of the protagonists. Sometimes it refers to the alienated capitalist social machine during the industrialization of capitalism; sometimes it refers to the Puritan God who pursues wealth and abstinence in the Puritan culture environment, and this Puritan God is essentially the subjective understanding and construction of the Puritans God is the personification and the divineization of the Puritan ethics; sometimes it refers to the mysterious nature.
